The story of Ruth is a remarkable account of loyalty, love, and divine providence. At the heart of this narrative is Ruth’s unwavering commitment to her mother-in-law, Naomi, which mirrors the steadfast covenant love of God for His people. Ruth 1:16-17 records her famous declaration:
“Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord do so to me and more also if anything but death parts me from you.” (Ruth 1:16-17, ESV)
Ruth’s Faithful Love

The Hebrew word used for steadfast love is chesed, which refers to God’s covenant loyalty, mercy, and loving-kindness. It is a love that endures despite human failures and weaknesses. Just as Ruth’s devotion to Naomi remained firm, so too does God’s love persist for His people.
Even when Israel strayed, God remained faithful. He continually extended mercy, renewed His promises, and ultimately fulfilled His covenant through Jesus Christ. The cross is the greatest demonstration of this steadfast love—a love that rescues, redeems, and restores.
Ruth’s Love as a Reflection of God’s Love
